Urdu Poetry History and Heritage


Poetry is a beautiful writing art almost in every language and dialect in the whole world. People like reading and writing poetry as a hobby and they like to express their feelings and words using a piece of poetry. Many Writers for almost all languages use short couplets or verses to express a situation or to resemble any identical circumstances that are the couplets or verses about.

Urdu Language has also a great treasure of Urdu Poetry by the legend poets passed in the history. Some of them can be mentioned here as Ahmed Faraz, Nasir Kazmi, Mir Taqi Mir, Mirza Ghalib, Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Allama Iqbal. Urdu Literature is a regular course included in academic process from elementary to Masters level and many of our poets have left behind such a worthy heritage of Letters, Literature, Novels and Urdu Poetry in various forms. When recalled secondary education days, some memories retrieve lessons in our Urdu Text books about Musaddas of Hali, letters and some selected urdu poems by some of these legends.

Urdu Poetry is nowadays, not only studied in Pakistan and India but also in other regions across the globe. The immigrants from Pakistan and India are doing well job in creating awareness of Urdu Language and so Urdu Poetry. Urdu Poetry Contests (Mushaira) are often held by Urdu Foundations and communities in many countries of the world, in which famous poets of the time, from Indo-Pak participate very well.

The literature and scope of Poetry in Urdu has grown over the time and it has formed branches in self of it. Poets adopt the type they are best in and populate their poetry collection. Some of Poetry styles include Sad, Funny, Free Verse, Sonnets, Ghazal, Acrostic, Song, Ode etc. I am also a reader of urdu poetry and like sad poetry in urdu because of the marvelous collection of sad poetry by Faraz and especially Ghalib. Its very appealing to urdu readers.
